Apple offers feature to stay connected without Wi-Fi and cell service

JACKSON, Tenn. — Traveling off the grid? Here’s how you could stay safe when Wi-Fi and cell service are unavailable.

Apple’s “Off-The-Grid” feature is a satellite connection that allows iPhone 14 and later models to send messages, request roadside assistance, and share location when there’s no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

To connect to a satellite, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon.

Connection times can vary depending on your surroundings, the length of your message, and the satellite network’s availability.

For example, a message might take 30 seconds to send in ideal conditions, but over a minute under trees.

“So if you dial 911, it’ll default and tell you that you can now text to the emergency services, or if you wanna message your friends just within the messages app, you can send that message and it’ll let you know that it is being sent via satellite,” said Francesca Sweet, Director of iPhone Product Marketing. “Or if you are using Find My, it is within the Find My app that you can update your location.”

Messages via satellite is available in the U.S. and Canada, and is free for two years after activating an iPhone 14 or later.
