Obion County School Board meets to discuss funds, possible school closure

UNION CITY, Tenn. — One local school board held a budget orientation session to discuss funds and a possible school closure.

The Obion County School Board and District 3 County Commissioner Danny Jowers met earlier Monday at the Obion County Mayor’s Office to discuss the proposal to close one of three county schools due to financial strain.

They discussed how costs have increased and incoming revenue has not been able to meet rising demands. Many teachers and faculty were there in opposition to the proposal.

Officials also shared their ideas regarding ways to avoid the closing of a school, like potentially raising taxes.

“And if not, then what other options are best for our kids cause the one thing that none of us — none of us — can do is we cannot lose sight of who this impacts,” said Tim Watkins, director of schools.

They are set to make a decision on the issues by the beginning of next year. Stay with us on air and online for potential updates as we continue our coverage.
