Porch pirate season: BBB shares tips on keeping deliveries secure

JACKSON, Tenn. — With the most wonderful time of the year upon us, don’t let a Grinch steal your holiday joy — or your gifts!

This season typically brings a rise in package thieves, commonly known as porch pirates.

Toddnetta Trice with the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South says these criminals usually target houses with a quick in-and-out route, especially those where the porch is near the street and easily visible.

Trice says some ways to avoid becoming a victim of a porch pirate include scheduling deliveries when possible, having items shipped for store pickup or to other pickup locations, or installing a home security system with visible signage.

“If you are expecting any type of package or packages, attempt to schedule its delivery time when you know you’ll be home, or you can ask your neighbors if they mind holding on to packages delivered to you,” Trice said. “Some retailers like Amazon offer garage delivery.”

If you suspect you’ve had a package stolen, Trice says to file a report with the delivery company and your local law enforcement.
