Husband, father dead after attempted murder-suicide in Medina
MEDINA, Tenn. — New details emerge following a fatal weekend shooting in Medina.
On Saturday, December 28, we received tips on a potential murder-suicide in Medina.
The 28th Judicial District Attorney, Frederick Agee, shared that a preliminary investigation revealed that 65-year-old John Koharski attempted to murder his family members before fatally shooting himself.
“It’s our understanding that the Koharski’s were going through a divorce,” Agee said. “That also Mr. Korharski may have had a medical issue that could have affected his cognitive ability.”
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s 2023 Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System, in Tennessee alone, 60,000+ domestic violence cases were reported in 2023. And a majority of these victims were female.
The preliminary investigation showed that this was a domestic abuse situation.
“Attempted to kill one of his adult daughters, he turned the gun on his wife of more than 30 years. Fired multiple rounds, she was not injured. At some point, he turns the gun on himself and he commits suicide,” Agee told us.
Agee also shared that this is not common in Medina, and that the daughter that was injured was visiting her family for the holidays.
Authorities confirmed she is a commissioned officer for the U.S. Army.
“Koharski’s adult daughter, that he attempted to kill, she was shot in the arm,” said Agee. “She was treated at the Jackson General Hospital, and at some point she may have been moved somewhere else.”
Agee shares that this tragedy is not a public safety concern and asks the community to keep the family in your prayers.
“We’re looking into all of that, but again there’s no threat to the community,” Agee said. “This was an isolated incident [and] the Medina Police Department, our office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the Gibson County medical examiner are continuing to investigate this case.”
