Roy Dale Petty
Roy Dale Petty, 76, of Hornbeak passed away Monday, January 6, 2025, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
A celebration of life service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held at Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of services Thursday.
He was born March 26, 1948, in Dyersburg, son of the late William Carl and Retha (Gwaltney) Petty. Roy attended Hornbeak School and was a 1966 graduate of Obion County Central High School where he was a standout basketball player. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin and received a Bachelor of Science degree in education and went on to eventually receive a Masters degree in education. After college Roy served four years in the United States Navy and returned home to begin a teaching and coaching career at the former Hornbeak Elementary where he spent his entire career before retiring from Black Oak Elementary after 30 years of teaching.
Roy is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sherri (Chaney) Petty of Hornbeak; one son, Don Petty and wife Alicia of Hornbeak; one brother, Teddy Petty and wife Karen of Hornbeak; four grandchildren, Garrett Petty, Kolby Petty and Dakota Petty all of Hornbeak and MacKenzie Muse of Union City; one nephew, T.J. Petty and wife Jill of Hornbeak; three nieces, Kelly Watts and husband Jody of Trimble, Keri Dunn of Hornbeak and Rebecca Darnall Elks of Wingo, Kentucky; and his uncles and aunts, Don R. and Jettie Gwaltney of Hornbeak, Paul Gwaltney of Union City, Louise Petty of Cleveland, Tennessee.
He was also preceded in death by one son, William Chaney Petty.
