Road conditions in Alamo, along Highway 412

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — The snow moved into West Tennessee in the early hours on Friday and by 9:00 a.m., as expected, several inches had accumulated. We traveled along US Highway 412 to see how road conditions were outside of the Hub City and in one local town.

If you’re thinking about traveling, you might want to think twice. Early Friday morning brought several inches of heavy, wet snow and although some drivers were seen out on the roads, the conditions were not favorable.

“The crashes related to winter weather began this morning around 7:00. There were three crashes in the first 20 minutes. So far we have had 5 crashes; most of those are on Highway 412,” said Stephen Sutton, public information officer for the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office.

Visibility worsened as highway cleanup crews refilled trucks with salt.

In Alamo, we spoke to multiple businesses that remained open for those who needed essential items like groceries and gas, clearing parking lots so customers could easily get in and get out. Town roads and intersections had multiple inches of thick snow and slush and some travelers took to UTV’s instead of traditional vehicles to get around in the conditions.

Officials are advising drivers to stay home as road conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day.

“You may be an expert driver in the snow but that’s not to say that someone else can’t hit you. Be careful, be aware of other drivers,” said Sutton.

Officials are also advising if you do have to get out, prepare for the worst – pack food, water, blankets and an emergency kit because responses will be delayed.
