Several communities to honor MLK Day with celebrations

JACKSON, Tenn. — Monday, January 20 will mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Several communities throughout West Tennessee are preparing events to mark the occasion, and the public is invited to join the celebrations.

In Jackson, the local NAACP chapter will hold a series of events featuring guest speaker Julian McTizic, Mayor of Bolivar. Schedule is as follows:

In Trenton, a celebration and march will take place beginning that morning. The opening ceremony will start at 10:00 a.m. at the Gibson County Courthouse. The Discovery Park of America in Union City will honor King’s legacy with a day of special programming beginning at 11 a.m., including keynote addresses, performances and hands-on activities for children. Click here for more information.

The U.S. Federal holiday was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983.
