Key tips to keep you, your pets safe as coyote mating season begins
JACKSON, Tenn. — We are currently in the coyote mating season which means there are some tips to remember during this time.

This time of year, it is important to take some precaution. It is rare that a human will be attacked by a coyote, but your pets could be in danger if left unattended. Especially if you have smaller pets. Jonathan Sparks has plenty of experience with coyotes and spoke with us about things to remember.

“You know, especially your smaller ones don’t need to be left unattended. They need to be either inside, in an enclosed kennel, or they need to have somebody with them,” said Sparks.

Sparks told us that these are incredibly smart animals. Just because you do not see them, does not mean that they are not there. Josh Michaelis is host of Fueled By Joy podcast that has touched on this subject multiple times. We got his input about the intelligence of coyotes.
“They know where they’re safe and where they can be harmed. In those areas, they’re very good about living right next door. And they’re also very good about not being seen when they don’t want to,” said Michaelis.
If you have some problems with coyotes, you can contact someone like Jonathan Sparks who has experience trapping these animals. He also talked to us about when it would be more likely to spot them.
“For the most part they’re nocturnal animals. Especially this time of year, the fall and winter time, you’ll see them more in the daylight hours,” said Sparks.
Sparks says they will eat just about anything. So removing food sources from around you house is a good precaution to take.

If you see a coyote near your house, making loud noises, whistling, or tossing object in their direction can help scare them away.
