Local politicians react to President Trump’s first day in office

JACKSON, Tenn. — President Donald Trump wasted no time shifting gears for the U.S. immediately after being sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.

Local politicians are speaking on the impact of President Trump’s first day in office and their expectations of the impact to West Tennesseans.

“I think he’s going to bring some stability that we’ve been looking for. We know that the rule of law is going to be enforced,” said District 78 Rep. Chris Todd.

Although some did express concerns with the president’s pardons Monday.

“One of the things that concern me greatly is that he pardoned a lot criminals yesterday that tore up the house in Washington. That’s the people’s house and you don’t tell me that the people need to do what they did to destroy the capitol as they did, and more than that to destroy lives. Now, that does bother me,” said District 80 Rep. Johnny Shaw.

Other orders enforced Monday include President Trump declaring a national emergency at the southern border.

“A lot of folks that have shown up in our communities that have broken into this country,” said Rep. Todd.

Todd also speaks on illegal immigrants who are already working in the U.S. — specifically in the agriculture field and on dairy farms.

“How does it look if they happen to be employing some of these folks that have work permits under the Biden administration to be able to work here legally even though they broke into this country. So I’m not really sure how that is going to work but we plan to work with the administration to make sure that that’s as smooth a transition as possible for the benefit of our communities,” said Rep. Todd.

Shaw is having faith that lawmakers will make an effort to give people good service throughout the entire nation.

“I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that the Republican party who is in charge will make an effort to give us good service not only in Tennessee but across this nation,” said Rep. Shaw.

President Donald Trump signed nearly 50 executive actions on his first day back in office — setting a new record — compared to the 14 executive actions in his first week in office in 2017.
