Carnegie Center’s grand reopening slated for Feb. 1

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Carnegie Center for Arts and History will be reopening and featuring new exhibition pieces.

For the entire month of January, the Carnegie Center has been shut down and undergoing renovations. Through efforts from the Legends of Tennessee Music Museum board and contributions from Senator Ed Jackson, the building’s windows are getting a much needed repair.

While the center is shut down for window repair, they have decided to renegotiate the space and really show off their best pieces.

“So, one of the big missions that I have here at the Carnegie is not only show the history of good art and music in Jackson, but also show where we’re going and what we’re doing now, and give new offerings,” said Aaron Hardin, director of Carnegie Center.

Some of the offerings include an historical exhibition of the Carnegie, a performance area featuring local musicians, and a Carl Perkins gallery. The front half of the Carnegie will be completely devoted to the music museum. Housing several musician artifacts and historical pieces.

“To see people that are making wonderful things and kind of championing those folks. And also, considering that Jackson — you know — is my home, and I think it’s really important to bring in art that people in Jackson can enjoy and can benefit from,” said Hardin.

The center will be reopening with the Bryan Birks exhibition titled ‘Articles of Virtue.’

It explores the relationship between the people of the American Midwest and their cars, capturing both the individuals and the unique culture shaped by the automobile.

They are also starting a program called the Artist Residency Program, which is a 3 month program for local artists that offers mentorship to artists of all kinds, creating a space that elevates what they’re doing.

“I’m very aware of how difficult it is for an independent, creative person to flourish in the world. It’s very hard. And so, we want this place to be a home base for our local artists, our local musicians to encourage them, to try to provide any resources that we’ able to provide to make sure that they’re successful in what they’re doing,” said Hardin.

The grand reopening of the Carnegie Center for Arts and History will take place on Saturday, February 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be free admission and refreshments.

Their regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you live outside of Madison County, admission fee is $10. County residents can go online and sign up for a free membership card.

They are working on other membership programs to make the exhibition more affordable to surrounding counties. If you sign up for a membership, you can come at 5:30 p.m. on February 1 to interact with the artists.
