Tax experts share tips as filing season begins
JACKSON, Tenn. — It’s officially tax time again.
For some, this could be a stressful time of the year, but being prepared is a critical step to an accurate tax return with the biggest refund.
Tax experts say one way to prepare before filing is to get organized, but don’t over-complicate things.
Gather W-2’s and other documents that are arriving and keep them in filing folders or an envelope in a safe space.
For this tax filing year, it’s important to watch for a 1099k form if you received more than $2,500 from third party apps like Zelle, Venmo, and Cashapp.
Experts also recommend filing with a tax professional to avoid any hiccups or errors that could cost hundred of dollars.
And keep in mind the earlier you file, the earlier you get your money.
“If you file early and you’re due a refund, you get that money early,” said Mark Steber, Chief Tax Information Officer, Jackson Hewitt Tax Services. “If you owe, you still have until Tax Day, April 15th. You can have your bank account scheduled to be debited, you can put it on a credit card at that time but you can set it up now, or just postmark a check at midnight that day.”
Experts also say filing early locks in your data with the IRS and will reduce the chance for scammers to take your money.
