Ways to prevent spread of flu, other seasonal illnesses as cases rise
JACKSON, Tenn. — With a recent rise in illnesses across West Tennessee, a few schools have announced that classes will be closed for the rest of the week.
We spoke with the Jackson-Madison County Health Department for advice on how parents can lower the risk of their child being sick and how to help others form being sick.
“Well at this time when we have a lot of respiratory illnesses circulating in our area it’s really important to practice good hygiene. Wash your hands often, clean those frequently touched areas in your home and work space,” said Ginger Rowsey, public information officer for Jackson-Madison Health Department.
Lexington, Hardin, Henderson County School Systems have all closed due to high numbers of students with the flu. The Jackson-Madison County Health Department has shared that the state of Tennessee is marked as ‘very high’ of those affected with the flu and flu-like illnesses.
“Flu can range from mild to very serious and it really depends on the person and the individual’s case. Especially if you’re over 65 and younger than 2, have asthma or chronic lung conditions. Flu can be very dangerous for you so we do encourage those to take those extra steps,” said Rowsey.
Flu symptoms to stay aware of are sneezing, sore throat, coughing, body aches, headache and fatigue. Aside from the flu there are other viral illnesses to be aware of.
“COVID is circulating, RSV is circulating we don’t have exact numbers on what’s out there but we do know a lot of respiratory illnesses are going on in our area right now. So just do your best stay vigilant and following those good hygiene steps and hope everybody can stay healthy,” said Rowsey.
To avoid spreading this illness, make sure to wash your hands frequently. Cover your mouth when sneezing, avoid touching your mouth, eyes, and nose. Get enough sleep, eat healthy, and stay up to date with your vaccines.
“We do offer the flu vaccine here. Even though it is late in the flu season it’s not too late to vaccinate. It’s good to remind everyone that the flu shot covers 3 different strains of the flu. So there’s a chance you can get one strain of the flu and then later get another strain,” said Rowsey.
A reminder for those who may have to treat someone with the flu or may have the flu. Remember to isolate from others until you’re fever free for 24 hours and until your symptoms improve.
