Jackson Parks and Rec prepares to host ‘Great Backyard Bird Count’

JACKSON, Tenn. — Need plans for Presidents Day? A Hub City Park is calling all birdwatchers of all skill levels.

Cypress Grove Nature Park in west Jackson is hosting the ‘Great Backyard Bird Count’ on Saturday, February 15 and Monday, February 17. The annual event invites all nature lovers to visit the park and take part in bird counting along side some citizen science groups.

New birdwatchers will be paired with experienced birdwatchers to aid in the identification of birds. The goal of this event is to ultimately make sure the park’s bird population is at a healthy and sustainable level. We spoke with the park’s recreation coordinator Darius Mullin to learn more about the event.

“You can come and learn. If you’re a birder every weekend, you can come get to meet other nature enthusiasts and so it’s a great way to get out in nature and to connect with other local nature enthusiasts,” said Mullin.

The event will start at 8:30 a.m. on the February 15 and 3:30 p.m. on February 17. To find where to register, click here.
