UofM at Lambuth’s planetarium opens its doors again after upgrading projector

JACKSON, Tenn. — A fun and educational experience in the Hub City has just gotten an upgrade.

The University of Memphis at Lambuth’s planetarium opened their doors for the first time this year after making small renovations.

“We’ve got a new projector, we haven’t done anything to the planetarium itself — to the dome or anything but we got a new projector,” said Hollie Wood, coordinator for the planetarium and faculty services.

Although this was small, the new equipment will make the experience worth the wait.

“The new projector is much sharper, it’s much brighter. The colors are much brighter. Our old projector was 16 years old,” said Wood.

For those who are avid visitors or even those who are interested, this new viewing experience is worth seeing multiple times.

“Our shows, even the ones we’ve got now, they’re going to look great. They’re going to look completely different, if you’ve seen them come back and see them again,” said Wood.

For their debut show, visitors were able to experience the universe right in the Hub City.

“The show tonight is called “Two small pieces of glass: The amazing telescope” it’s all about the invention of the telescope, the history of the telescope. Even if you think you know the telescope you’ll probably learn something in this show its a great show,” said Wood.

Lambuth’s planetarium shows are free and even has something for all ages.

“On the last Tuesday of the month we have a show at 6:30 as well. We’re open Friday afternoons at 1:30 and we have two kid shows a month. On the second Friday at 3:45 and the fourth Saturday at 9:30 and those shows are just for kids,” said Wood.
