Educator of the Week: Allison Reed

It’s time now to recognize our Educator of the Week, brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery.

Allison Reed is a 2nd grade teacher at Milan Elementary School.

She’s always enjoyed working with kids, but education is actually her second career.

“I got a degree in business and marketing and decided that I wanted to do something with a little more meaning, so I switched gears and got my Masters in education,” Reed said.

Reed has now been teaching for 14 years.

She shares that 2nd grade is a big time of transition and preparation for students.

“We are always encouraging them to become better versions of themselves and spurring them on to higher learning,” said Reed.

Reed shares her favorite part of being an educator.

“The ability to teach them in small groups and more individualized attention. I think that that’s important to create connection.”

Reed states that each year is different because each class has different abilities and needs.

“You have to constantly change, really just day to day your approach, and then realize, when things don’t work, backup and reboot.”

When it comes to teaching style, Reed utilizes manipulatives, peer groups, and other activities to keep students engaged.

“I do enjoy planning more interactive lessons where the students get to move or be together and interact with each other.”

Reed also enjoys seeing past students in the community.

“When they remember your name and see you in public, then that’s kinda confirmation of that calling to teach.”

Reed is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
