Hit a pothole? Here’s what to check your vehicle for

JACKSON, Tenn. — As the Jackson Street Department continues patching potholes in the city, we have some tips on what you should look out for in case you encounter one.

Potholes have sprouted all across West Tennessee since the rain and snow began. They can do major damage to your vehicle, so what are some things that you should look out for?

“Well one of the main things is your tires, it can ruin your tires like put knots in them or holes in them or what have you. And the alignment, if you hit a pothole, you should have your alignment checked at least once a year anyway, but with the potholes like they are right now, probably more often,” said Rita Jones, office manager for the Old Hickory Auto Care Center.

You should also check the undercarriage of your car. When it sustains damage, you may have some fluid leaks that need repairing.

“Well it’s a major concern for me. I do my own mechanic work, and I know anybody that hits a pothole can do major structural damage to their suspension system,” said Steven Dixon, shopper.

In the event that you accidentally hit a pothole and sustain damage, here are some tips.

“Always go to a safe place, check and make sure your tires are not low or you haven’t damaged, you know, lighting or anything like that to continue on to a shop. I would say call the street department and let them know where they are when you locate one, and most of the time they’ll get out relatively soon and patch them for you,” said Jones.
