Black History Month Spotlight: Dr. Margaret Taylor
JACKSON, Tenn. — It’s time to spotlight one of our neighbors, presented to you by the Tennessee Lottery.
This week’s spotlight is Dr. Margaret Taylor.
Dr. Taylor grew up in Lexington and is a graduate of Lexington High School.
After living in Louisiana for some time, Dr. Taylor and her family decided to come back to West Tennessee, where they have been living in Jackson.
Dr. Taylor is involved in many great programs and organizations in our area. One of which being the President of Jackson Area Business and Professional Women. You may recognize the Sterling Awards that they award to many women in West Tennessee each year.
“I’ve been a working woman all my life,” Dr. Taylor said. “I know that there are so many others that are out there. Anything that we can do to better the working environments of women, improving the pay scales of women compared to men, is something that I need to be a part of.”
Dr. Taylor is also the Vice President of the board for the Jackson Equity Project. They recently hosted a car show to raise money for the Jackson Boxing Club. This provides a very unique opportunity for youth in the area.
“We just feel like it’s a way to get young men and young women to learn how to channel the energy that they have and not use that energy for violence,” she said.
Dr. Taylor was also involved with the “A Step Ahead” program for seven years. She says she is always a woman’s advocate and any help they can receive is great work.
“I grew up with a mother who gave. That’s what she did. She gave to everybody. She helped everybody she could possibly help in whatever way she could. I believe that children learn whatever they live in.”
Dr. Taylor says it is important for people to find something they are passionate about to do anything they can to help in their community.
