Educator of the Week: Abby McPherson

It’s time now to recognize our educator of the week, presented by the tennessee education lottery. We take you to Chester County to meet this week’s winner.
Abby McPherson is a retail, hospitality and tourism teacher at Chester County High School. She shares her favorite part of being an educator.
“Building relationships with the students and getting to know them and just having a really loving and engaging and fun classroom environment that we can all come together and learn new things. I learn with them just like they learn from me,” said McPherson.
McPherson expresses gratitude for the Hope Scholarship which she received when attending Jackson State.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for students who may not be able to have the funds to go to college. It’s something great to receive and I think that what we strive to do here is make sure that all students are eligible for that so that they can use it,” said McPherson.
McPherson mentions a specific perk of working in career and technical education.
“Because this is a CTE class, our numbers aren’t as high as normal classes and so it does give opportunity to work one on one with students which is great. Obviously, if I see someone struggling, I take them in and help them in any way that I can,” said McPherson.
For future educators, McPherson shares a quote she saw right before becoming a teacher.
“Every student deserves someone who’s excited to see them and that’s something that really stuck with me because you don’t realize how much of a difference you can make just by being excited to have them in your classroom,” said McPherson.
McPherson says she appreciates her nomination.
“I’m excited, it’s great to know that what I’m doing makes a difference. It’s always nice to have that validation and I’m so honored that I can make an impact on these students’ lives everyday,” said McPherson.
McPherson is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
