City of Jackson closes out its Black History Month celebration with final program

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Hub City caps off the month of February with its final city-wide Black History Month program.

This month, the City of Jackson has been hosting its Black History Month celebration at city hall. Today’s event included performances by Victoria Wedley, the Jackson Central-Merry dance team and the Destiny Church Choir.

Programs included a showcase of visual and performing art from members of the city’s Black community.

Coordinators of today’s event tell us why celebrating Black History Month is so important.

“We have to continue to push our young people and the next generation so that we can continue to survive and make it throughout history,” said Nadia Beard, dance educator with JMCSS schools.

“No matter what our race is, no matter what our background is, just being one happy family, being grateful for where we’ve been and thanking god where we are going,” said Nicholas Grayson, member of Destiny Church.

In addition to the performances, visual art exhibits featuring the works of Neveah Burdine, Stormie Steele, Chrystal Brown, Courtney Haynes, and Jordan Nichols were on display at city hall all month long.
