Tips for parents of picky eaters
JACKSON, Tenn. — Having trouble getting your picky eater to explore other food options? We have a few tips.

- Be a role model: Children learn about food by watching others eat.
- Don’t force food: Forcing a child to eat can have the opposite effect.
- Keep offering new foods: It can take multiple tries for a child to like a new food.
- Make meals pleasant: Have a clean, bright eating space, and limit distractions.
- Offer a variety of foods: Children are more likely to eat a variety of foods if you offer them a variety.
- Make food fun: Try cutting sandwiches into triangles or using a new utensil.
- Be patient: Keep offering new foods without pressure.
- And try eating as a family: Children are more likely to eat their food if they see others eating it.

“Dinnertime is hands down the most difficult time for parents. That’s when we’re making the most negotiations with our picky eaters. Five-year-olds are officially the pickiest,” said Meaghan B. Murphy, nutritionist.
It’s normal for children to be picky, and they’ll likely become less picky as they get older.
