Union hosts scripture reading marathon, volunteers needed

JACKSON, Tenn. — A local Christian University is uniting with others through scripture. Volunteers will read passages from the Bible with the goal to complete the entire book over the next two weeks.

“The apostle tells Timothy in the New Testament to devote yourself to the public, reading a scripture. I think that’s instructive to us and that is why I came out here. I saw an opportunity, and I wanted to be a part of it,” said Chris Garner, pastor with Holly Grove Baptist Church.

And the opportunity still exists to share God’s word with others. It’s part of Union University’s “Scripture Reading Marathon” that is held under Miller Tower on the university’s Great Lawn. Readings will take place March 11-13 and again from March 18-20.

Volunteers will get to read scripture for around 10 minutes or so. Readings will begin each day at 8 a.m. and conclude at 8 p.m. And, by the end of the sixth day, the entire Bible will have been read.

Associate Professor of Missions and Ministries Frank Anderson says he loves the Lord and he loves his word. Also saying you never know what effect scripture reading may have on others. Anderson says, for believers, hearing God’s word brings comfort.

“It was God’s word that led to us coming to understand what Jesus has down to bring about so great a salvation. So, who knows, our simply reading God’s word may have the same effect on others,” said Anderson.

Christian publisher, Broadman and Holman will provide free copies of the Christian Standard Bible for the first 300 readers.
