Behind the scenes: A look into the lives of local first responders

LEXINGTON, Tenn. — One local emergency medical service gave us a unique look at the everyday heroes working behind the scenes to save lives.

We went on a ride-along with local paramedics and EMTs to learn about the challenges they face and the dedication required to do their jobs.

For most of us, when we think about emergency medical services, we often picture the flashing lights of an ambulance speeding through traffic. But what happens behind those doors? What is it really like to be on the front lines of life-and-death situations every day?

We had the chance to go on a ride-along with our local paramedics and EMTs to get an up-close look at their world.

“Well, this is a tight-knit group of people. You, know, in EMS, they see the worst of the worst in healthcare, and this group of people, they love on each other, they joke with each other, they try to make light of everything because we deal with a lot of traumas — a lot of deaths everyday,” said Glynn Mooney, EMS director for Henderson County.

The job of a paramedic or EMT is fast-paced, unpredictable and often emotionally intense.

They respond to emergencies, provide critical care and make split-second decisions in life-or-death situations.

“It’s a wonderful job. You meet people in the community when they call us, when they need help with any emergency, we interact with different organizations and it’s just a great job,” said Tina Walker, EMT.

The men and women of EMS truly embody selflessness, and their ability to stay calm under pressure is something we can all admire. It’s a job that requires not only skill and expertise but also compassion and empathy.

“It’s a big family here, I mean, everybody knows everybody. We all get along for the most part. Of course, everybody argues and bickers sometimes, but it’s a family and that’s what we do,” said Zane Lewis, paramedic.

These first responders play a crucial role in our community. Leaders say they deserve respect and appreciation.
