Reminder: Deadline approaching for Real ID
JACKSON, Tenn. — With time winding down, state leaders are reminding Tennesseans of the deadline to register for a new form of ID.
The Tennessee Department of Safety is reminding Tennesseans who have plans to get their “Real ID”: there’s still time. Here’s what you need to know. Soon, any Tennessean planning to visit a military base, or take a commercial flight , visit any federal buildings and nuclear plants will need a Real ID.
These IDs prohibit federal agents from accepting driver’s licenses and other ID cards that don’t meet the “Real ID Act of 2005.”
The standards will also add additional extra security to protect residents identity.
The Tennessee Department of Safety shares there has been an influx of those that are trying to receive their Real IDs before the May 7 deadline.
The Department of Safety is suggesting that patrons should wait 30 days prior to their trip and the deadline to have time to receive a hard copy of Real IDs and to decrease the number of residents in line at the DMV.
To apply for the Real IDs, you should have proof of citizenship, two proofs of residency, and your social security number.
Real IDs are not needed for buying liquor, tobacco products, or visiting hospitals, post offices, federal courts, or to vote, or receive federal benefits.
If you have to fly before receiving the hard copy of your Real ID, other forms of acceptable Real IDs are passports and approved, federally issued IDs.
