Shiloh presents ‘Johnston’s Last Day’ Ranger Hike
Johnston’s Last Day Ranger Hike – The South Never Smiled Again The Story of General Albert Sidney Johnston at Shiloh
SHILOH, Tenn.— Save the date and join Shiloh National Military Park on Saturday, March 29, for a special ranger-led hike.
Ranger Anthony Killion will be leading an approximately three-mile hike across the Shiloh battlefield, following in the footsteps of Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston. Learn about General Johnston right from the moment he hears the first shots to the tragic moment he succumbs to a mortal wound.
Ranger Anthony will be examining the battle as it would have unfolded before Johnston’s eyes. Johnston knew that the Battle of Shiloh would be a critical moment in his military career and the fortunes of the Confederate cause in the West. He stayed close to the front line throughout the day on April 6, rallying his men and directing the movements of brigades at key moments to try and ensure a victory for Confederate forces.
What key command decisions impacted the outcome of the battle, and would General Johnston have been more successful if he had stayed to the army’s rear? Ranger Anthony will ponder these questions and more during the hike.
