Chester County sees increase in vehicle burglaries

CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn. – Chester County Sheriff Mark Griffin said the county is seeing an increase in vehicle burglaries and is urging residents to be diligent in protecting their items and reporting suspicious activity.

The sheriff said the county has seen more than its normal share of vehicle break-in activity, but not as many as many residents are seeing on social media. Several social media posts are alleging over 80 vehicles have been burglarized over the weekend and Griffin said that is not an accurate number.

“We have had several incidents reported. Not 80 of them, but a lot more than what we’re accustomed to,” said Griffin.

He said several incidents were reported on Saturday and the sheriff’s office believes those incidents all happened in the early morning hours between midnight and 6 a.m.

Griffin said the individual or individuals responsible for these crimes are looking for an easy way to grab items and have not damaged any vehicles at this time.

“They’re entering into unlocked vehicles and taking cash, firearms and valuables,” said Griffin.

The sheriff’s department is still investigating these break-ins and is asking for the public to report anything they see that is suspicious. If you see any suspicious activity, call and report it at: 731-989-2787.

Griffin also wants to remind all citizens to make sure to lock their vehicles at night and remove all valuable items from the vehicle, especially firearms.
