Public Safety Announcement from Humboldt Police

WILDLIFE RELATED

Officers have responded to multiple calls regarding sick or disoriented raccoons in the area.

We want to spread awareness about raccoon distemper, a contagious viral disease that affects raccoons and other wildlife.

Signs of distemper in raccoons include:

  •  Confusion or disorientation
  • Wandering aimlessly during the day
  • Eye discharge and nasal secretions
  • Aggressive or uncharacteristically tame behavior

While distemper does not pose a risk to humans, it can be deadly to unvaccinated pets (especially dogs).

Please keep your pets up to date on vaccinations and avoid contact with sick wildlife.

If you see a raccoon displaying these symptoms, do not approach it. Instead, report it to local animal control or Humboldt PD.

See the attached flyer  shared from Humboldt PD for more details. Stay safe, Humboldt!
