Spring means more motorcyclists on the road. Here’s what to know
JACKSON, Tenn. — Warmer weather means more scooters, motorcycles and bicycles will be on the road.
Spring is officially here, which means people will be spending more time outside. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety, there have been 327 fatalities on Tennessee roadways since January 1.
The Tennessee Highway Safety Office reminds all motorists to “look twice” and safely “share the road” to help keep motorcyclists safe.
“One of the biggest issues with motorcycles right now are traffic lights. Everybody tries to blow through yellow lights and you really have to wait before you take off at a green light anymore. Of course, for motorcycle safety, you always want to start with a helmet and some good riding gear. Anything but shorts and flipflops,” said Bob Beasley, owner of Bob’s House of Honda. “You really have to watch out for bicycles as much as motorcycles and regular vehicles. It’s so many people driving, talking on the phone, and texting these days so you really have to double check all your intersections and just the flow of traffic.
For safer sharing of roads, cyclists should be visible, follow traffic laws, and ride defensively, while motorists should give cyclists ample space, be aware of their surroundings, and yield the right of way. If you’re here locally and you’re looking to learn more on cyclist safety, Beasley suggest some places to consider.
“For beginner riders Jackson State a gives a motorcycle safety course. Bumpus Harley Davidson gives a rider safety course over there also. I highly recommend it even for experienced rider. You can always pick up something that you had been doing wrong your whole life if you have been riding,” said Beasley.
The Tennessee Highway Safety Office also reminds drivers to slow down, especially near crosswalks and intersections.
