Is it worth it? Raising chickens vs. buying eggs
JACKSON, Tenn. — The price of eggs are higher than normal which brings the question regarding raising chickens. Is it cheaper to produce your own eggs as opposed to buying them?
The initial investment can be higher than you may think. Especially if you are starting from ground zero. Buying or building a coup, keeping them warm and clean, buying feed and then regular maintenance costs are just a few examples of what you will need.
Other than egg production, raising chickens can be a good hobby for the entire family. This activity brings numerous responsibility opportunities to the table. So, to answer the question: Is it worth it to have your own chickens just for the eggs?
“It’s a good thing. It’s a very healthy thing. But you need to think about what happens up front. So there is an investment up front of all of the items that you need. A constant investment with food, and some of the other supplies the shavings for the chickens as it goes on,” said Marti-Skold Jordan, community relations manager for Tractor Supply.
Jordan says that, if you keep the chickens for many years, it will certainly be worth the investment.
