Makin’ Music: Student-led tradition returns to Freed-Hardeman campus
HENDERSON, Tenn. — An annual event is back again at one of our local universities.
Makin’ Music has returned to Freed-Hardeman University. It is a wonderful time on campus, and it is a year-long production that only students are in charge of.
From costumes, to vocals, to props, to anything that you see on stage, students put it on — the tradition for Makin’ Music.
“Freed-Hardeman is really big on building a community,” said Natalie Turner, Makin’ Music coordinator. “I believe that making this process more student-led helps build that community. Students and even us are able to build new skills that we didn’t have before, such as learning how to work with others well, how to communicate well, and it’s also just a really fun experience.”
Every single year on Thursday morning of show week, hundreds — possibly thousands — of kids and students from all across West Tennessee fill the audience to see this show performed by the FHU students. We were actually able to talk to the host and hostesses about how excited they are, who told us the visiting students are always the best audience and cheer for everything.
Of course, this weekend there will be tons of people watching more performances. While it won’t be the students of West Tennessee, it will be family and friends and alumni of FHU all coming and connecting and seeing each other once again. It is what Freed-Hardeman is all about.
“That community and just all coming together,” said Anna Geiger, Makin’ Music Groups Manager. “Even if you might not have heard about Freed-Hardeman before, it’s just fun. I mean, like you said the part on the green. Just creating fun even if you might not know a lot of people.”
This one is certainly a special kids show, because it is the first one in the newly renovated auditorium on Freed-Hardeman’s Campus.
There are three more performances: one on Friday night, a Saturday matinee, and a Saturday night show.
