Storms Thursday Evening, Few Showers on Friday, Dry and Nice Weekend Coming!

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

We had some pretty cool looking weather today across West Tennessee. Unfortunately we had a 70 MPH wind gust near the airport in Jackson and larger than golf ball size hail fall as well in Crockett County. Several people sent it photos of mammatus clouds too. Mammatus clouds like like cotton balls and typically form from turbulence within the cumulonimbus cloud will cause mammatus to form, especially on the underside of the projecting anvil as it rapidly descends to lower levels. Also, we had some amazing rainbows show up today as well.

After a widespread 10-15″ of rain in West Tennessee along and Northwest of I-40, rivers continue to run very high! Record levels have been reported along the Obion River and the Forked Deer River is also running very high into the Major Flood Stage. Record river flooding is still happening right now across several rivers. Avoid unnecessary travel on any flooded or closed highways. Please heed all road closures and Turn Around, Don’t Drown when encountering flooded areas!

THIS WEEK:

After picking up over a foot of rain in many places in West Tennessee from Wednesday evening through Sunday morning last week, we are looking mostly dry this week across the region besides Thursday. The heavy rains caused rivers, creeks and streams to run very high and they should remain that way for a few more days this week as the water runs downstream. The next chance for rain and storms is coming on Thursday, but it doesn’t look like much in the rain department and overall the severe weather threat is low.

The warm up started on Wednesday with highs making it back up to around 70°. The main reason we warmed up was due to the winds changing back from the north to south early in the day. We saw some clouds returning late in the day but we stayed dry Wednesday. There was a much better shot for rain and storms on Thursday in the afternoon. Wednesday night lows fell down to the low 50s to kick off our Thursday. Thursday highs reached the mid 70s but there was more clouds and some heavy rain showers and some afternoon and evening storms as well. The main severe weather concerns were hail and straight line winds with the storms that did develop. We were under a slight risk (2/5) for severe storms. The storms should clear out after the sun goes down and we cannot rule out a shower or a brief weak storm on Friday, but Friday looks mostly dry.

A front will pass Thursday night and that will cool things down some as we wrap up the work week. As of Thursday night, the winds will shift from the west during the day to the northwest overnight. Clouds will stick around for the most part Thursday night and break up some during the day on Friday. Friday morning we will start in the mid 40s but reach the mid 60s by Friday evening. Friday night will be a little cool and we should drop down to around 40° to kick off our weekend.

THE WEEKEND:

The weather doesn’t look too bad this weekend across West Tennessee and we will NOT be dodging thunderstorms or severe weather. In fact, it looks like a dry weekend but it will be a cool start for the most part. After starting Saturday around 40° in morning, highs will reach the low to mid 60s into the afternoon. Expect mostly sunny skies on Saturday and expect a sunny day for the most part on Sunday. The winds will come out of the north on Saturday before transitioning back to the southeast Sunday afternoon. The southeast winds will warm us back up into the mid 70s on Sunday. Sunday night will be warm, humid and a bit breezy with lows falling to the upper 50s to kick off next week.

NEXT WEEK:

Monday morning lows will start out around 60° and Monday looks like a really nice day. Highs on Monday will make it up close to 80°. We will see partly cloudy skies on Monday as a mostly dry cold front is expected to pass by Monday night into Tuesday morning. Monday night lows will fall down to the upper 40s. Tuesday will packed full of sunshine with mostly sunny skies. Highs on Tuesday will reach the mid to upper 60s feeling very Spring-like. The winds will shift from the west on Monday to the northwest on Tuesday behind the front. The winds on Wednesday will stay out of the north allowing highs to only make it up to around 70°. The winds will return to the southeast on Thursday warming us back into the mid 70s on Thursday. As of now, Thursday is looking mostly dry but there could be some rain chances as we wrap up the work week next week.
