How seasonal allergies can affect pets too
JACKSON, Tenn. — Did you know more than 100-million people in the United States live with various types of allergies? Well, our beloved pets face similar challenges too!
Allergy season is quickly approaching and according to a Kynetec Landscape study, skin issues are the top reason pet owners visit their vet, accounting for 30% of all health concerns during wellness exams.
Pets can develop allergies similar to humans, often manifesting as skin irritation, itching, and in some cases, respiratory issues. Common causes include food, environmental allergens like pollen and dust, and insect bites.
“Flea control is really important as well so animals can have allergies to fleas. When they get bit by a flea, they can have that allergy to the flea saliva that can cause really severe inflammation in a lot of the animals,” said Dr. Martha Cline, Purina veterinarian.
Symptoms can vary, but excessive scratching, licking, hair loss and ear infections are common indicators.
