UT Martin says it implements multiple safety measures in case of an active shooter, this includes training classes at the beginning of semester, and restricted access to dorm rooms.
Bud Grimes, with Martin’s Office of Community Relations shares that the safety of their students is a top priority.
“I asked the chief of police here, ‘Where do we stand? How do you feel about it?’ He said ‘We’re as prepared as we can be at this point.’ We can always invest more in safety features and we try to do that when there is money or grant money available to it, but again, it being an open campus, people changing out all the time as far as different student classes comin through, you just have to be alert and have to keep educating people,” said Grimes.
He also said that the campus is well lit at night and cameras are constantly on the look out.
