Police reveal details in Crockett County shooting that left 1 dead
UPDATE (4/23/25): Fatal shooting in Crockett County ruled self defense
CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — On Thursday, the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported shooting at a residence.
CCSD is actively investigating a reported shooting that occurred Thursday night, around 11 p.m., in the 6000 block of Chestnut Bluff-Maury City Road.
According to law enforcement, this incident appears to be a domestic violence dispute.
“The Crockett County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call, indicating that a male subject had been shot in her residence,” said Stephen Sutton, public information officer for CCSD.
The preliminary investigation revealed the male subject was armed with a knife and a gun. Allegedly, he assaulted the female subject and she shot him.
It remains unclear whether the woman was armed or if she used the weapon belonging to the man who allegedly assaulted her.
“The Crockett County Medical Examiner’s Office was called out to the scene last night. The decedent was identified as 32-year old, male, John King, III, and an autopsy has been ordered. He will be transported to the Middle Tennessee Regional Forensics Center in order to undergo a postmortem exam, where the investigators and the forensics team will continue to gather evidence pertaining to this case,” said Sutton.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist due to the circumstances and nature of the shooting.
“In light of this tragedy, the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department would like to emphasize the importance of mental health awareness and the need for resources to combat domestic violence.
