AMP summer concert series returns for 11th year

JACKSON, Tenn. — An annual free concert series returns to downtown Jackson with 11 shows for the 11th year. This year featured new sponsors and a new look.

The Jackson AMP Delta Faucet Summer Concert Series kicked off the opening season Friday evening with a little music from the Bluff City right here in the Hub City.

“I get my sound from the heart of Memphis. The home of the blues, rock and roll, soul — all that good stuff. My inspiration is Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and the late great Taz Fields,” said Marcus Scott, singer.

Scott and his band The New Project performed some classics at the Jackson AMP and kicked off with a song that relates to Scott.

“Crazy in a good way, musically crazy, filled with love, joy and peace. You’re going to experience that tonight crazy music,” said Scott.

Performing with him is Diamonique Jackson who also sang some classics that got the audience on their feet for this opening series. This is Scott’s second year performing at the Jackson AMP.

“We always start this thing off — they always start it off with a little Memphis influence, so I’m honored. It’s a little pressure to be honest, a little pressure. But, I’m here and ready to face any challenge. This crowd is amazing they always welcome me and they welcomed me back, so I’m grateful to do this,” said Scott.

AMP volunteers Frank McMeen and Chris Allison shared that Memphis Tourism made Marcus Scott’s performance possible. McMeen and Allison also share their favorite part of the AMP series.

“I like when you watch the kids roll off the back and mom and dad are having a picnic with friends and chatting. You just kind of enjoy music from the side and really focus on each other. So it’s a really family-oriented type event,” said Allsion.

“When we’re packed in the sponsors area and the grass is full; to work through the crowd to meet all your friends,” said McMeen.
