Cicada season is drawing near: What to know

JACKSON, Tenn. — It’s getting close to the middle of spring, so get ready for the song of summer 2025.

Cicadas are set to return from their underground broods. Here in West Tennessee we have three different kinds of cicadas: the annual brood, 13-year brood and the 17-year brood.

Cicadas spend almost their entire lifespan underground and only come out to mate in the summer. You can expect to hear their song from May to late July.

If you have a fear of cicadas, according to a local expert, they’re harmless.

“Cicadas are not dangerous to humans pets or plants, and there’s no evidence that cicadas hurt trees at all. I know I get a lot of people [that] ask that. If they’re in the soil they’re feeding on roots and hurting trees and plants. We have no evidence that that happens. They’re not harmful to people or pets. A lot of dogs actually eat them and so they’re like cicada snacks so it’s not going to hurt pets at all,” said Sebe Brown, field crops entomologist.

West Tennessee will see the annual cicadas as well as the 17-year brood this summer.
