Boys and Girls Club hosts 40th annual ‘Steak N’ Burger’ fundraiser

JACKSON, Tenn. — One organization geared towards helping the youth hosted their annual fundraiser.

After 40 years of having steak and burgers, the Boys and Girls Club continues to show why they support and love the youth.

Sabrina Anderson with the Boys and Girls Club shares where the idea came from.

“Steak and burgers because you need something unique for a fundraiser, and the kids get to eat the steak and the adults get to eat the hamburgers. You know some kids want to swap they really, really like those burgers,” said Anderson.

Each table at the fundraiser was bought by a sponsor. The sponsors then sit with the members of the Boys and Girls Club while enjoying their company.

“The youth are there so they can see what they are donating to and to encourage them to know that their money is going to great cause,” said Anderson.

Guests were also able to enjoy a fun game of “singo.” Instead of the usual bingo, this game is hearing the song and then marking it off your board.

“If we want to teach them how to read, we need to do it in a fun and engaging way, and this is another way to do it. It also teaches them about vertical, diagonal and cross-ways, and making them count. They have to do the numbers to make it happen,” said Anderson.

Jade Taylor was awarded Youth of the Year for both Jackson and Brownsville Boys and Girls Club. She was able to speak on the impact it’s had on her.

“I talk about how it gave me wealth, not just the wealth of money but the wealth of love — the love of care. I talked about how Boys and Girls Club furthered me in choosing my career path in psychology and it started my love for volleyball,” said Taylor.

Not only is she grateful for the award, she is also grateful for those who continue to show up.

“We have a much bigger support system than I would have ever imagined. I always knew there was support because I knew of my club and some of the Jackson’s club. This just shows how many people truly care about the youth and our development and how we’re going to change the future,” said Taylor.

Madyson Lee, an award winning poet, shared a poem to those who attended.

“My theme was how does violence affect me. And what can I do to resolve youth violence. So I just poured all my thoughts into that poem,” said Lee.

Lee says this poem relates to not only her, but also to the mission of the Boys and Girls Club.

“The Boys and Girls Club is about youth, and protecting our youth, and making sure they strive for the future. My poem is about protecting our youth and making sure that you hear them and you see them,” said Lee.

Anderson thanks their sponsors and she is extremely proud of those that spoke at this evening’s event.
