South Side High School hosts memorial ceremony for students

JACKSON, Tenn. — A local high school holds a memorial ceremony for some of their students Thursday afternoon.

South Side High School took some time out of the school day to remember some of their classmates who will not be graduating with them.

Attending the event were students, families of the deceased and some of the school’s faculty and staff.

The memorial service, while short, was very meaningful and impactful as the South Side staff and yearbook staff honored four fallen Hawks.

The memorial started off with a few words from South Side Principal Dr. Sheri Baldwin.

After Dr. Baldwin finished speaking, a few students took the floor, each telling of a memory they had with one of their classmates.

The event not only honored the memories of Evan Scott and Brayden Wilkerson, but also honored the memories of Troy Hernandez and Xavier Young.

Troy Hernandez was a sophomore whose friend shared memories of times their four wheeler was bottomed out in a mudhole.

Friends of Xavier Young, a junior, described him as the life of the party with a natural talent for speaking.

Senior Brayden Wilkerson was said to have had a dry sense of humor that was appreciated by all who knew him.

And senior Evan Scott’s friend shared a memory of a prank played on a teacher who only found Evan in the dark because of his glow-in-the-dark shirt.

Wilkerson and Scott will be recognized at the graduation ceremony later this month. Alongside the recognition, the seniors will each have an empty chair and a moment of silence during the commencement.
