New art installations coming to the Hub City

JACKSON, Tenn. — Some new artwork is coming to the Hub City.

In June, Anderson Park in downtown Jackson will get a functional art installation. The work will be created by “Looking Up Arts,” an experienced artist team from San Francisco that focuses on interactive large scale art.

Looking Up Arts was chosen through a competitive application process by a selection committee of public art commission members and site stakeholders to bring new life to an empty sidewalk space.

This project is led by Our Jackson Home and the City of Jackson.

The piece includes multiple sculptures that will also function as tables and chairs for the public to use. The design will incorporate agricultural and musical elements, complimenting the neighboring farmers’ market and AMP.

“This is our first call that we’ve ever put out for usable art. So we’re really excited that these artists had a great idea of how to use this empty space, a really creative idea. It’s going to add big pops of color, it’s a very colorful installation,” said Lizzie Emmons, program director for Our Jackson Home.

The upcoming installation will be a permanent piece of art expected to be in the space for many years to come, and will transform an underutilized section of sidewalk into a vibrant, colorful community space.
