Day 3: Cellphone expert, Zach Adams’ previous lawyer testify

HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — The third day of the Adams hearing brought several witnesses to the stand.

Doug Bates, Zach Adams’ defense attorney, started the morning with cellphone expert, Johnathan Reeves.

Reeves supported his original conclusion that if both the victim and the defendant carried their phones on their person, they could not have been in the same area on the day of her murder.

“The call detail records that I reviewed just didn’t support the fact that he transitioned into the south sector of Parsons sometime in that time frame, but there was no specific time or location that I’m aware of,” said Reeves.

Another defense witness was Jim Simmons, one of Adams’ previous lawyers, who made a public comment that he and Thompson were not on the same page during the trial.

Bates questioned Simmons on why he suggested that Adams should plead guilty.

“As I understood the facts of the case at the time, I thought that it was very likely a jury would convict him, and even convicted I thought it was also very likely that he would get a sentence of death, and given those facts, I think he had to consider what his options were,” said Simmons.

During cross-examination, prosecutor Christopher Boiano introduced Simmons’ original notes in the 2017 trial.

“Holly had been at Zach’s house…Holly was a nursing student…money from family to get drugs…Dylan brought Holly to Zach’s house…three people raped her–shot and dropped her body near Zach’s house…Zach gave cell phone to third person…defense to get cell phone expert and have Dylan’s statement suppressed,” said Simmons.

Simmons’ notes reveal information he received during the trial and plans on how to utilize it.

Day three continued as more witnesses testified. Join us tonight at 10 p.m. for more details.
