NWS Confirms Small Tornado West of Jackson, Few More Storms Possible Tonight!

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

The National Weather Service in Memphis surveyed the damage at the Kirkland Factory just to the west of Jackson Regional Airport southwest of Jackson around 3:15pm yesterday afternoon. The tornado was an EF-0 with 75 MPH winds, was 75 yards wind and on the ground for a little more than a mile. No injuries were reported from the brief tornado. Quick note on the severe weather yesterday. The National Weather Service completed a survey in Carroll County. They found sporadic straight line wind damage (maxed around 80 mph) in Clarksburg. We will bring you more storm damage survey’s when we receive them.

We are expecting some showers and weak storms to move into West Tennessee later tonight into early Thursday morning. A severe storm or two cannot be ruled out but overall our severe weather threat looks low. That being said, an isolated wind or hail storm will be possible between 11pm and 6am. We should get a nice break in the rain from Thursday afternoon through Friday; but wet weather is coming back Friday night and unfortunately looks like it will be sticking around through the 3-day weekend. THIS WEEK:

Wednesday was a pretty nice day. We saw mostly sunny skies and highs on Wednesday will made it up to around 80°. It was not a very humid day and the winds varied but keep a westerly component to them most of the day. They will turn up calm tonight. There will be a cold front on the way later tonight that will bring in some showers and maybe a few weak storms. We are under a marginal (1/5 risk) for severe storms tonight. The front will pass by Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. Severe weather seems overall unlikely along the front and chances for rain are only 30-40% as of now. That being said, a gusty wind storm cannot be ruled out overnight.

We will see some early day rain but it will not last all day on Thursday. After a few morning showers or weak storms and some early day clouds, the weather should improve as the day goes on Thursday. Most of the afternoon will be dry but it will be a bit cooler with the northwest winds behind the cold front. Highs on Thursday will reach the mid to upper 70s and Thursday night lows will drop to the low 50s to kick off our Friday. There will be some sun towards the back half of the day and mostly clear skies Thursday night.

Friday is also looking like a pretty nice day. There will be some rain and weak storm chances returning late in the day of Friday into Friday night. Some will linger into the day on Saturday. Severe storms seem unlikely Friday night though. Highs on Friday will again only reach the mid 70s but Friday night will be a bit warmer that Friday morning with overnight lows falling down to the mid 50s. We should start the day with mostly sunny skies but some clouds will return later in the day and expect a mostly cloudy night. It will be warmer Friday night due to the clouds and shower chances.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND:

Not great news for the upcoming weekend if you were hoping for 3 nice days. Each day of the holiday weekend will include some rain showers and maybe some weak storms. Severe weather seems unlikely this weekend but there will be some weak storms mixing in with the rain showers. The exact timing of the rain and storms each day is still yet to be determined but a low pressure system looks to be close enough to impact our weather each day. As of now the most likely day to encounter storms will be on Monday. Rain chances are 40% on Saturday, 50% on Sunday and 60% on Memorial Day. It is NOT going to rain all weekend and there will be some nice periods as well so I am not saying cancel your outdoor plans, but make sure you stay weather aware and no where to take shelter if a storm or the rain showers move into your area.

Highs on Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid 70s with Sunday maybe being a few degrees warmer. Monday will also be in the mid 70s but probably be a bit more humid as well due to the winds returning out of the southwest. The winds on Saturday are forecast to come out of the east keeping the dew point down a bit. Saturday night lows will fall to the low 60s but Sunday, the winds will return to the south, keeping Sunday night lows up and only falling down to the mid to upper 60s. The humidity will be increasing late in the weekend and that is why we think there is a better chance for storms on Monday than over the weekend. But again, each day we are expecting some rain showers to pop up at least. Expect more clouds than sun all weekend long and there will be several hours of cloudy skies although the sun may try to peek through each day for a couple hours as well.
