Jackson City Council holds work session to discuss solutions for budget deficit
JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson City Council held another budget work session Thursday afternoon.
This meeting was to provide solutions to a deficit problem that is in the current proposed budget. There is a $3.75 million deficit in the capital fund.
The city is not allowed to turn in a budget with a deficit to the state, which they need to do by June 30.
The council members realized they had three options: Take the money out of savings, increase property taxes, or take away some money from various departments.
In order to cover the entire $3.75 million deficit, it would take a property tax increase that would result in citizens paying an average of $82 more per year. Property taxes have not been raised since 2003.
The council did not decide on which option they are going to do. The next city council meeting is Tuesday, June 3.
