Educator of the Week: Melonie Shelby

It’s time now to recognize our Educator of the Week, brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery.

Melonie Shelby is a 6th grade science teacher at Lexington Middle School.

She shares her affection for the subject of 6th grade science.

“My standards are very relevant, and so I think that’s my favorite part is that it’s very applicable to every single day,” Shelby said.

Shelby has been teaching for 16 years and offers a variety of learning styles to fit the different needs of students.

“Maybe they’re not really good at the book stuff, but they’re usually really good at the hands-on stuff, so, if we can mix those two things together, we tend to check everyone’s boxes,” said Shelby.

For aspiring educators, Shelby offers practical advice.

“Sub, get in the buildings, see what it looks like and most of the time that will… it just sparks something in teachers.”

And for those who have just begun their education career, Shelby gives encouragement.

“New teachers, don’t give up, ’cause you’ll find your rhythm and, you know, it’s not always the first year, it’s not always easy, it’s not always the easiest group of kids, but you will, you will find your rhythm.”

Lastly, Shelby motivates current educators to seek their passion.

“Even old teachers, those who’ve been teaching for a long time, you know, find something that you love. Maybe it’s the subject, I can say that I absolutely love teaching science and it’s just a lot of fun.”

Shelby is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
