UT Martin honors Memorial Day with annual commemoration
MARTIN, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee at Martin held their annual Memorial Day commemoration Friday morning.
There were multiple speakers, including U.S. House Representative David Kustoff. He spoke to the audience regarding what he feels about Memorial Day.
“We do enjoy our barbeques,” Kustoff said. “We do enjoy our cookouts and our picnics. But Monday and this weekend is about remembering and honoring those Americans who put on that uniform and never came home.”
Major General Mike Maloan is a Tennessee National Guard retiree. He is also from Martin.
Maloan is the Chancellor for the 27th District Chancery Court that presides over Obion and Weakley Counties. He was the guest speaker Friday morning.
“There are countless others who make similar sacrifices,” Maloan said. “There is not amount of things or recognition we could every bestow upon them for what they gave for us.”
Maloan is a 1972 graduate of UT Martin and a 1974 graduate of Memphis State, where he received his law degree. In 2004, Maloan served as the head lawyer for the Tennessee Military Department.
Maloan retired from military services in 2012.
