Local veterans talk importance, meaning behind Memorial Day

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Monday, Americans across the country are honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives in service.

As many West Tennesseans enjoy the long weekend, remember that Memorial Day stands for something more than a barbecue or an off day. It’s a time of reflection to honor the soldiers who gave their life for our freedom.

“It’s for remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. There are veterans that did not die in combat that are gone from us now. I do think of them, my father being one. He was an Army veteran and a Navy veteran,” said Rob Irons, adjutant for VFW Post 4606 and U.S. Army veteran.

Columns of names stretch across the Veterans Memorial Park in Savannah, representing decades of sacrifice from wars long past to those fresh in memory.

“That means a lot to me because it means that I would sacrifice for this country, but it means that I knew that my kids coming forward and my grandkids coming forward would still have the freedom that they have,” said Willis Winters, commander for VFW Post 4606 and U.S. Navy veteran.

Memorial Day isn’t just a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder that freedom comes at a cost. And for those who served, that cost is never forgotten.

“Just take a moment of reflection. It doesn’t have to be great, just a moment of reflection to think about would you do the same? Could you stand for that chair across from your table to be empty? And that’s what many families are going through right now, is that empty chair because someone gave that final sacrifice,” said Irons.

We thank all who have served, and especially remember those who gave their lives for our country.
