Hub City residents share their concerns on safety at local parks

JACKSON, Tenn.— Following a recent shooting in one of Jackson’s city parks, we asked people at Liberty Garden Park how they feel about the safety of the city parks.

Residents shared that they believe this park is safe during the day, but wouldn’t come after sunset.

Another resident shared a desire to have a camera at the hidden back area of this park and at the North Park towards North Side. One other resident said they enjoy the park, but they keep their head on a swivel while enjoying the scenery and walking in the park.

The recent shooting at Kate Campbell Park left seven injured. Six were treated and released from the hospital. One victim is still receiving medical care.

Wednesday afternoon Jackson Police Chief Thom Corley shared new measures the Jackson Police Department will make.

“As we approach the summer season, the Jackson Police Department will enhance our patrol of the parks, our neighborhoods, and other areas frequented by our youth,” Corley shares.

Jackson Recreation and Parks director, Tony Black provided residents and frequent park goers with some assurance.

“I just want the community to know that our parks are safe and we’re working with the police department to ensure that each person in this city has a place that they can go to feel safe,” Black says.

Chief Corley also said the department is working to reduce violence in city parks by implementing additional resources such as five e-bike officers to patrol the parks.
