Contestants go for gold as State Games of Tennessee kick off in the Hub City

JACKSON, Tenn. — If you’re looking for some fun to add to your weekend plan, the State Games of Tennessee are underway here in the Hub City.

It’s opening ceremony night for athletes aiming to bring their talents to the forefront with Olympic-style competition.

Athletes from across the state gather together at Liberty Tech High School preparing to compete in up to 15 different sports this weekend for the State Games of Tennessee.

The kickoff ceremony included messages from several guest speakers, live entertainment and a chance to see the lighting of the torch.

“This is our first year to have the State Games of Tennessee, and Jackson is the host city. This is an Olympic style, multi-sporting event festival. It’s just a fun way for our community and our state to enjoy some Olympic games and have fun. We’re kicking off tonight with open ceremonies in true Olympic fashion,” said Lindsay Dawkins, chief of staff for the Greater Jackson Chamber.

This year they have competitors from as young as 6 years old to senior citizens at 74 years old that are in it to win it. Whether you’re an athlete, a spectator, or a volunteer, the state games provides a true celebration of Tennessee’s sporting spirit.

“One thing we love about the state games is that it’s for anybody, because if you’re like me, I would love to go to the Olympics, but I know that I might not be quite good enough for that. This is a way everyone can participate no matter age or ability,” said Dawkins.

The State Games of Tennessee invited Miss Tennessee Teen Volunteer, Kristen Henning, to make a performance appearance as she prepares to relinquish here crown in July of this year.

For Henning it’s all about making a difference.

“They asked if I would sing the National Anthem because all the volunteer queens are coming from the surrounding area , and I was delighted to be able to come because I only live about 7 minutes away. So, an experience and an event like this is always really fun to come to,” said Henning.

There will be bronze, silver and gold medals presented to the game winners this year.

In some sports, medalists get the opportunity to advance and participate at the State Games of America. Which is held every two years for all of the states who participate in state games for a chance to represent your state at the national level.

If you don’t get to attend this weekend, the second round of state games will continue next weekend, June 14-15, starting as early as 8 a.m.

And there’s still time to register to play. To register or find details on potential rain cancellations for the weekend, always check in with their online schedule that can be found here.
