George Lane Chandler
He was born October 15, 1937, a son of the late George Thomas Chandler and Muriel Gertrude Story Chandler. He served in the US Navy from June 1955 to September 1975, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. During his military career he served aboard the USS Forrestal, the USS Enterprise and the USS Ranger completing numerous tours in Vietnam. He completed his military career as a Company Commander in San Diego, California and moved his family back to his home State of NC in 1975. He served as a Corrections Officer at the Youth facility in Morganton, NC prior to retiring in 2005, when he acted as caregiver for his first wife, Helen Christine Chandler during her long bout with cancer. In 2008, he married Amelia Bauer and moved to Jackson, Tennessee where he resided for the last 18 years. Lane and Amelia spent time camping in the NC mountains with their beloved friends. Lane loved wood working and built many beautiful things for his family. He also loved hunting, fishing and camping.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James (Jimmy) Chandler, William (Buddy) Chandler, Kenneth Chandler, his first wife, Helen Christine Walsh Chandler (1961 until her passing in 2005) and his daughter, Sharon Elane Chandler Lanning.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Amelia Bauer Chandler of the home who was his beloved and selfless caregiver for numerous years; daughter: Angela Abernethy and husband, Tommy, of Maiden, NC; son, George Lane Chandler, Jr. and wife, Carla of Connelly Springs, NC, son, Buddy Bauer and wife, Elva of Jackson TN, son, Josh Bauer of Jackson TN; grandchildren, James Abernethy, Alex Abernethy, Cheri Paysour, Kristie McGinnis, Jennifer McNabb, Kelly Wise, Brandy Brittain, Justin Chandler, Dustin Chandler, Cody Bauer, Heather Bauer, Cannon Bauer and Amelia Kay Bauer and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 2 PM at Catawba Funeral Home with Pastor Nathaniel Austin officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 PM – 2 PM at the funeral home.
