June 16 marks World Sea Turtle Day

JACKSON, Tenn. — Monday marks World Sea Turtle Day, a day for highlighting the importance of sea turtles across the globe.

World Sea Turtle Day also encourages global supporters to dive into the threats that sea turtles face.

Tony Monahan is an artist, writer and professional educator at the City University of New York. He is also a turtle enthusiast who turned an initial photography project into a 46-month quest to chronicle turtle encounters in the U.S.

The resulting product is the the Turtle Lovers’ Guidebook. This book takes you on a journey through 164 public sites across the United States where you can witness these fascinating creatures up close.

“Sea Turtle Day is a day to remind people that these animals are in trouble and need our help,” said Monahan.

The book features more than 500 stunning photographs, showcasing more than 200 turtle species and subspecies.
