Trey Smith returns to West Tennessee to host football camp
JACKSON, Tenn. — Trey Smith is coming back home once again to host his annual football camp.
Last year was the first ever football camp Trey Smith held in Jackson. It was a major success with a huge turnout, as hundreds of local football players showed up to not only learn from Smith, but from many other successful players and coaches as well. This year will be the same.
“We are going to have a lot of former VFL’s — a lot of guys I played with in the NFL too,” said Kansas City Chiefs’ Trey Smith, a West Tennessee native. “I think it is really cool to understand the wealth of knowledge we have there. Not just players, but coaches as well. We’re talking about high school coaches from across the country, former NFL players, you know, legends, collegiate players as well from the State of Tennessee.”
With so many players and coaches willing to come to Jackson with Smith to help out, the opportunities are endless when it comes to player development at this camp.
“For younger kids, my focus is to have some structure, but I really want them to go out there and have fun,” Smith said. “Have a blast and love the game. For the older kids, we’ll probably focus on tackling, a lot of movement and agility drills, anything in terms of preparation for the season, then possibly some one on ones. Lineman stuff and things of that nature. They can get out and compete, all within reason.”
This is truly a special event for Jackson — an incredibly successful local coming back to help his community. Smith tells us why this is important to him.
“I always felt like God’s blessed me to put me in a position to give back to others. I think that’s something that people in my position should do a lot more of,” Smith said. “The opportunity came up for me to have a camp and I jumped on it. It is something I want to continue doing while I have a career. Because for me, once again, I just want to give back to this city.”
Smith tells us that this is all about having fun, bringing energy, and developing key fundamentals in our local football players.
The camp begins tomorrow at University School of Jackson’s stadium, with rising 2nd through 6th graders going from 9-11 a.m. Then, rising 7th through 12th graders from 1-4 p.m.
