Comics Universe background:
For 38 years, Comics Universe has served as a haven for fans of fantasy, superheroes, pop culture, and science fiction—offering a welcoming space to explore the thrilling worlds of their favorite characters. At the heart of the store is owner Rethel Miller, who opened the shop with her husband, Carl Smitty Miller, in 1987. After Smitty’s passing in 1996, Rethel continued running the store on her own with unwavering dedication. As of February 2025, Rethel Miller proudly celebrates 29 years as the only woman to operate a comic book store in West Tennessee and 38 years in business. Her shop, located at 1869 US 45 Bypass, Jackson, TN, remains a beloved staple in the community. Comics Universe is a regular participant in the annual comic book event Free Comic Book Day, which takes place the first Saturday of May and also has at least two Super Back Issue Sales, events where new readers can get into comics or seasoned collectors can fill in gaps in their collections or try out new series, throughout the year. Customers—many of them longtime regulars—know they can count on her to order and hold their favorite issues, while new visitors are always greeted with her signature warmth and helpful spirit. Open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Rethel Miller is always behind the counter or helping a customer hunt down the book they are searching for, rarely taking a day off. And her favorite superhero? Wonder Woman, of course.
